Availble for pre-order at pubslush.com

Cursed because he could foresee but never prevent death, Jo Bailey despaired until he discovered how to make money using his curse.

This is the story of Jo as told by the people who loved him and the people who hated and tried to kill him.

Description

Jo Bailey amassed millions of dollars using his ability to foresee the deaths of others, often using questionable means. To protect the daughter he never knew, he used his ill-gotten fortune to found "The Church of Jo." This book is his story, as told by those who actually knew him.

His tortured suburban boyhood as told by his first love; His college days, during the UC Berkeley Free Speech Movement, as told by a philosophy student who was with him in Santa Rita Prison; The Oakland Induction Center as told by a young man who died in Viet Nam; The birth of his daughter as told in the diary of the mother who killed herself; How he was shot in the Mojave Desert as told by a former County Sheriff. In addition, others tell of two kidnapings, a murder, vengeance for a wrongful death, and a church that wanted to clone Jo.

This novel is written as if it is a book about an actual person who had lived. It is a fictional work in the guise of reality.

Synopsis

Chapter 1 -- Ella Wikkens, on her death bed, wrote this letter (one of several) to her daughters. In it she told how she was Jo's foster sister. She and Jo and all the foster kids attended PG&E summer camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills. There Jo met his first love Ester. He attempted to prevent her from drowning and accidentally created his personal ghost.

Chapter 2 -- Neil Fitzpatrick wrote an unpublished book about the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. In one chapter he tells of how he met and befriended Jo at U.C. Berkeley and tried to involve Jo in the Free Speech Movement. As part of a sit-in, Jo was arrested and taken to Santa Rita prison, where a strange albino demonstrated that Jo could not prevent death.

Chapter 3 -- A tape made by John Mellion in Viet Nam was mailed back to his parents. On that tape, John described Jo's aborted induction at the Oakland Induction Center. Jo fainted which caused John to break his finger. Later, at the hospital, Jo finally got the hole in his head fixed.

Chapter 4 -- Harry Mellion, John Mellion's brother wrote a letter to the Church of Jo describing a fateful dinner with Jo. Harry, the last surviving child in his family, invited Jo to Christmas dinner. A mistake, because his mother still hated Jo for marrying her daughter, Harry's sister. Jo insulted the mother over dinner and was thrown out by her. Afterward Harry wondered why Jo had not foreseen his father's death.

Chapter 5 -- Paul Langdon the British science fiction author, shared an essay he had once written for the London Times, but had never submitted. In it he told how he traveled to Europe where he met Jo at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. There Jo revealed how he made money and why he needed so many post office boxes. Jo gave a million dollar gift to Paul with only a few words.

Chapter 6 -- Joanne Tracy was the editor for Jo's first book. She discovered what Jo learned in Paris. Threats were made against her, her publisher and Jo. She heard from the police that a man had been shot in a post office. She was kidnapped but set free under a cloud of red-wing blackbirds.

Chapter 7 -- Barry Goodman, on death row for killing his friend's killer, shared the story of how he became Jo's bodyguard. He revealed that the man shot at the post office was his friend, a mentally disabled guy who carried a jar of dimes and drank rum from a thimble.

Chapter 8 -- Dahlia Phillips had Jo's child, Joy, out of wedlock. Dahlia kept a journal of the time she spent in a hospital because of her suicide attempt. That journal documented how her mental health declined after Jo contacted her. Sewn clothes could not save her from Red's Tamale Day and the redemption of ghosts.

Chapter 9 -- Wayne Manley, a retired sheriff from Needles, California, told the story about the time Jo was shot in the Majave Desert and how Jo's predictions of death, blindsides and chickens screwed up the sheriff's life.

Chapter 10 -- Ace Hoklins revealed that he was once part of the gang that tried to kill Jo in the Mojave Desert. Ace told how he foiled Jo's kidnapping and revealed his redemption when Jo asked him to found the Church of Jo.

Chapter 11 -- Dustin Willowsmith, a reporter, searched for Jo Bailey and finally found him after he died in Wyoming. Dustin documented the mystery, death and burial of Jo and how it effected so many others. He discovered who wanted to kill Jo and why. He remembered Icarus and wondered about cloning.
